Are you considering redefining your smile? Both crown and veneers are dental restoration techniques that can enhance the appearance of your teeth. Considering both are for dental restoration, which one would win in crown vs veneers? There’s no winning in dental procedures since all of them are useful in their own unique way. Veneers are used for your front teeth while crowns are used for your entire mouth.

What are Dental Crown and Veneers?

Both techniques have high success rates, but it’s important to know the details of dental veneers and crowns to determine which one is right for you.

Veneers

A veneer is a very thin covering of porcelain cemented to the tooth’s front surface. The enamel covering the front of the tooth is filed down to a depth of roughly 0.5 mm in order to prepare the surface for bonding the veneers on.

Crown

A crown covers the entire tooth. In order to put a crown, a larger portion of the tooth must be filed down or ground down. Prior to creating the crown, your dentist will extract any decaying dental material if you have dental decay.

Crown Vs. Veneers: What is the Difference?

Here’s the difference between dental crown and veneers:

Purpose

If all you want is a cosmetic makeover, veneers are the best option for you. It is when you wish to change the size, shape, or color of a tooth, and you can also get veneers with crooked teeth.

Conversely, crowns serve a more comprehensive and practical role. You opt for a crown when your tooth requires replacement due to serious damage, breakage, or loss.

Covered Area

Dental veneers may only cover the outside of a tooth to improve its appearance. In contrast, crowns need to completely cover the implant or the remaining natural tooth to prevent leaks.

Grinding

Before putting on a crown, the tooth must be ground down to a size of roughly 2 mm, while with veneers, the tooth will only be ground down between 0.3 and 0.7 mm. Veneers are less invasive than crowns since the preparation doesn’t require much filing of the natural tooth.

Material

Veneers come in composite or porcelain forms. The primary benefits of porcelain or ceramic veneers are their increased visual appeal, resistance, and durability. In contrast, crowns are made of porcelain, zirconium, and metal-porcelain.

Placement

Since veneers are intended to be aesthetically pleasing, they are often bonded to the upper central and lateral incisors of the teeth. On the other hand, crowns have a practical purpose so they are placed on any tooth.
